Me Made March 30: up-cycled

I have really tried to wear something hand made or vintage every day for the month of March. And succeeded! But having time to document it has been a bit of a challenge since I've been very busy sewing dresses for an upcoming event. However, today I got to work early and snapped a shot of myself wearing an up-cycled dress I got for $5 at Goodwill.

 Before / Inspiration / After

The dress was an ugly, unflattering thing from the early 90s with shoulder pads and mid-calf length skirt. I added bust darts, took it in where necessary, removed the shoulder pads and shortened the skirt and the sleeves.

Vintage finds

This morning after picking up a new coffee table for the living room (re-make project), I went to the Toronto Vintage Clothing and Textile Show. It's a small one-day vintage fair with excellent vendors. I saw 1920s children's clothing, beautiful handmade quilts, tons of gorgeous dresses, shoes, sewing material, purses and beautiful vintage laces. I could have spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars....

This is what I came home with:

Hand-knitted mohair sweater in pink with lemon yellow dots.

Plaid jacket for spring.
This will be so cute with a mini-skirt and black loafers!

Hand embroidered blouse for the summer.
I plan to wear this with waist-high red pants or shorts and sandals.

Love the print on this 1960s summer dress!

The last three items is from The Vintage Ramble. It's a Toronto-based vintage Etsy store and the girl who runs it also does private parties. What a great idea!

S = Sailors Stripes!

Here's the finished result for the hand painted navy stripe summer blouse:

Before and after!

Bottom seam

Flat fell side seams

It was so easy! I used Setacolor Pebeo fabric paint in Indigo blue and a regular flat paintbrush and went to town. After letting each side of the blouse dry for one hour I set the paint by throwing it in the dryer on high heat for 60 min. Hopefully the stripes will stay after the first wash...

Fabric painting

I don't have pictures to show you yet but I'm very excited about my next sewing project!

I made this cute summer beach blouse last night in white cotton batiste and have decided to hit the craft store and paint the fabric in navy blue stripes. One of my favourite items of clothing is a navy striped top and after buying numerous such tops, some very expensive and some not, and having ALL of them loosing their fit/colour after a few washes, I'm going to see if the hand-made option is what in the end will triumph.

17/31: Me Made March at work

It happened! Spring finally arrived! I saw at least 4 girls wearing skirts, spring coats and bare legs on my way to work today. Although I'm not that brave (and it was still just 5 degrees this morning) I was very happy to be able to give my winter parka hanging there sadly in the closet a "I told you so" smirk. See ya in 8 months, sucker!

I'm wearing a pleated skirt made from a 1960s pattern in a blue, purple and pink cotton fabric. I have at least 3 other skirts in the same model and I love them all equally.

I got so excited about the warm temperature I bought myself these shoes online:

Aren't they adorable?

Another spring coat

Slowly, slowly. I can feel spring arriving. The temperature is crawling above the freezing mark and the snow is gone.  In anticipation of the new season I made myself another coat. This one in navy and beige twill with accents in hot pink.
The original pattern from 1958.

I loved the shape of the shorter coat but wanted to add more details and adjusted the pattern to make beige cuffs on the sleeves and a thicker border on the bottom of the coat. I'm very pleased with the result!

I used hot pink twill under the collar as well as for the lining of the pockets and the belt. I was debating the colour of the lining but went with a navy blue which turned out really well. My first option of light blue would have been too busy.

Another day working from home.
Today I'm wearing a hand-knitted sweater in off white marino wool.

Coffee break!

This cold is getting the best of me. But damn it if I wasn't going to get myself a semla today! There is a wonderful little Swedish bakery here in Toronto that offers these incredible pastries (a cardamon bun filled with marzipan and whipped cream).

On the way back home to force feed myself even more oregano oil than the day before, I stopped into a tiny thrift store and found more vintage fabrics! I might feel crap but these finds make the day a little brighter.

7/31: Me Made March Fabric Shopping

Flu symptoms were more or less gone this morning. Well less bad at least.
I wore a pair of red pants I made in the fall as I went fabric shopping this afternoon.
(As well as vintage booties, vintage Ray Ban Cats, Kate Spade bag, Michael Kors coat bought for $40!)

This is what I came home with! Some for myself, some for others.
All vintage fabrics from the 60s and 70s.

The cold is back. I've returned to a horizontal position in front of the TV wearing pjs, eating home made muffins and forcing myself to consume oregano oil. Getting well requires rest and no sewing. At least for tonight. Maybe tomorrow I can start working on my spring coat?

6/31: Me Made March

I'm blogging from bed. Woke up with flu symptoms this morning.... Ugh. So the hand made item I'm wearing today is my grandmother's knitted socks. I might feel yucky but my feet are warm!

Today is all about Advil, Vietnamese Chicken Pho and old issues of Vogue.

5/31: Me Made March

This is what I wore to our 4 year City Hall wedding anniversary dinner (we have another "real" wedding anniversary coming up next month).

The dress is made from a 1960s McCall's pattern in a fabric I got on sale for $2/yard a few weeks ago.

(Psst, the pattern was a duplicate of a pattern currently on sale in my Etsy shop...)

4/31: Me Made March

Today's hand made item is the apron I was wearing while making dinner. It used to belong to a friend's mother and she made it from fabric remnants. It's so well made and I love wearing it while cooking! It really calls for a more glamourous outfit but the current weather conditions doesn't really allow that...

Tomorrow is date night! I promise to wear something smashing!

Shoes of Prey

Have you guys heard of Shoes of Prey? It's this amazing company that lets you design your own shoes for a very reasonable price compared to other designer brand shoes. I went to town! These are some designs I would love to have made for me!
