In Toronto this weekend? Then pay a visit to The Clothing Show (in the Queen Elizabeth Building, Exhibition Centre)! It's a showcase with 300 booths of independent designers and vintage dealers and I will be there in booth #183 showing my Maelle dresses!

In other words, no sewing or blogging until next week.

Spring jacket done!

After getting wonderful input on what fabric to choose for my spring jacket I decided to go with a soft coral red linen fabric and a lively cotton lining with red, yellow and grey dots. Since I drafted the pattern and made it to my measurements, it fits me like a glove! And the soft cotton lining makes it so comfortable.

I had first planned to go with four covered buttons at the front but decided after putting the jacket on that a hook-and-eye closure would be more suitable and show off the lines and the simplicity of the jacket.

I love this jacket so much I think I'll might make it in a navy blue and maybe in a dark denim as well. If I manage to find the time... I have a busy week and weekend ahead of me and my next project is that late 1970s jumpsuit I got in the mail last week. I also started to knit a summer sweater for my son last night. We'll see if it will be done for his 2 years birthday next month...

60's bikini

A recently finished project:

The pattern I used:

I only had to make minor adjustment to both the top and the bottom  so it was pretty straight forward project. I used a black swimsuit lining on the inside and zigzagged (did I just make up a verb?) thin elastic tape around the bra and the bikini bottoms (that way the bikini won't come off as I get out of the water).

Not sure that this bikini would work in St Tropez but it will definitely be suitable for wearing around the pool while the seniors in our building watch me chase our water-crazy toddler.

Until next week.

I'll be in NYC the next few days celebrating 10 years together with my wonderful husband. Lots of walking, eating and shopping (and trying not to miss our little toddler too much!)

See you all next week!

Drafting a spring jacket

I have spent my day working on a pattern for a new spring jacket. It's a fitted jacket with princess seams, flared peplums from the waist, round collar and 3/4 sleeves.

Muslin front and back

I had originally made a regular collar for the jacket but think a round collar will be much more suitable. Also, I'm adding a pleat for the peplum at the center back for more flare. The finished jacket will also have a cute little belt at the waist and possibly covered buttons.

I have decided to go with a linen fabric but the biggest question remains: in what colour??!!

I'm going to use this jacket pretty much as often as I can and since most of my dresses and skirts I wear during the spring and summer season are colourful with bold patterns I need something neutral but still interesting.

Tomato red? Coral? Cobalt blue? Purple? Beige? Black? Off white? Pale pink? Olive? The list goes on...

Please help me decide! I'm hitting the fabric stores on Friday.

Summer dress

One (of many) recently finished summer dresses.

This is the pattern I used from the mid 60's:

I was happy to find a fabric similar to what was originally modeled on the pattern. I used a white cotton batiste lining and two purple buttons on each side of the pockets.
