Drafting a spring jacket

I have spent my day working on a pattern for a new spring jacket. It's a fitted jacket with princess seams, flared peplums from the waist, round collar and 3/4 sleeves.

Muslin front and back

I had originally made a regular collar for the jacket but think a round collar will be much more suitable. Also, I'm adding a pleat for the peplum at the center back for more flare. The finished jacket will also have a cute little belt at the waist and possibly covered buttons.

I have decided to go with a linen fabric but the biggest question remains: in what colour??!!

I'm going to use this jacket pretty much as often as I can and since most of my dresses and skirts I wear during the spring and summer season are colourful with bold patterns I need something neutral but still interesting.

Tomato red? Coral? Cobalt blue? Purple? Beige? Black? Off white? Pale pink? Olive? The list goes on...

Please help me decide! I'm hitting the fabric stores on Friday.

  1. Oh my! This is soooo beautiful! If you can find a nice green, that'd look amazing. Or red would be great too.

  2. Hi, the jacket looks great....I think purple is big at the moment, and I also think cobalt blue would look great with your colouring. Best of luck - the right colour will reveal itself!

  3. Red! You can wear red with a lot of colors (and this would look amazing with a pencil skirt!): black, navy, grey, white, and of course red :) Best of luck. Red is my vote ;)

  4. This is going to be an incredible jacket no matter what color you make it!

  5. I vote coral or purple, but I agree with will be beautiful no matter what colour you settle on!

  6. I'd personally go with (in this order of preference) a wine/champagne, grey or navy.

Gorgeous jacket! I can't wait to see the finished version!

  7. primary colors would be great- they seem to be the in-thing right now.

  8. Thank you for all your comments and input! I'm leaning towards a navy blue or darker plum purple. Let's see what reveals itself tomorrow at the fabric stores!
